Compare pet insurance policies – Part 1

Compare pet insurance policies – Part 1

“It is better safe than sorry” is what can perhaps best depict the philosophy of pet insurance policies. I learned this tough lesson $1500.00 dollars later when my puppy was admitted with a bout of hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis and when my my credit card was mercilessly charged for the IV line, medicine and a three night stay at the emergency vet hospital. One day later, I was already urgently applying for a pet insurance policy plan worried such a thing could happen once again to one of my pets.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST PET INSURANCE POLICY

It seems like nowadays the choices of pet health insurance policies are so abundant, that comparing them and choosing the one that better suits your pet’s needs can feel like an overwhelming task. I know this as a fact, as I spent days looking for the best coverage for my four pets.

Comparing pet health insurance policies nowadays can be like comparing apples to oranges as there are different plans covering different scenarios and carrying different options.

Most pet insurance companies offer toll free numbers for inquiries before enrolling. Paying a visit to various pet insurance websites may also help in choosing the best.

What many people do not realize is that pet insurance can be very affordable, in most cases it is much more affordable than human health insurance. You may expect in average to pay approximately between $25 – $35 a month for a dog and between $15 – $30 for a cat.

Shopping around for the best deal is a good starting point, but if you are looking at very low premiums remember the saying “you get what you paid for”. Carefully evaluate what is offered against the advertised price.

Things that you will need to evaluate and ask yourself are as follows:

Do you want coverage for emergencies only or do you want also yearly shots to be included? Upon applying for enrollment you will be offered different options of coverage depending on your needs. Accidents, illness and routine care coverages are options you can choose from.

Does your pet have any pre-existing conditions? Not all pet insurances may cover pre-existing conditions, so this is a fundamental question to ask prior to enrolling your pet in a pet insurance policy. Some insurances as well may not accept pets older than a certain age. You will also have to inquire with the insurance company if your pet has a medical condition or if they will cover older pets.

Why travel insurance is important?

Why travel insurance is important?

How many times have you taken a trip without travel insurance? Have you ever been injury while away from home only to find that your insurance did not cover hospitalization or treatment? Whether traveling across the state or around the world, having travel insurance is a worthwhile investment. Hopefully, having travel insurance is a lesson you will not have to learn the hard way like I did.

I vacation several times a year within my state at a well-populated tourist area that I assumed would be able to accept my insurance if I ever became ill or was injured. Imagine my surprise when I broke my leg at one of the shopping malls and, upon arriving at one of the local hospitals, was informed that my insurance would not cover the treatment I required! I was too far away from home to travel where my insurance would cover me and because my leg was broken, I basically had to agree to pay the charges to receive the treatment I desperately needed!

Well! When the pain subsided, I was positive I would be having a talk with my insurance company and get the matter straightened out. How could I not have been covered right in my own state?!? I wasn’t in another country. Little did I know that because I had not gone through the preauthorization process, even though the treatment was necessary, because I was taken to an emergency room, the services were not covered.

From that moment forward, I have not traveled without it and solemnly swear by a few simple truths about travel insurance. First, never assume that your regular insurance will cover an injury while you are away on vacation. If your policy does not spell out coverage in writing, you need travel insurance. Second, travel insurance doesn’t have to be expensive but should suit your needs. For example, comprehensive domestic travel insurance will only provide peace of mind for travel within the United States.

Third, understand how care is offered in foreign countries where you are the foreigner. Take some time to investigate the region where you plan to vacation and find out what services are offered and how those services can be paid for. The best travel insurance is worthless if not accepted.

Your travel agent may be a good source to begin with. If booking a cruise or vacation package, ask your agent about travel insurance. Often travel insurance can be added, at a discounted price, as a part of your vacation package. Also check with your regular insurance provider to see if travel insurance can be purchased through their company. Many insurance companies are interested in being competitive and may offer the option to purchase travel insurance at a discounted rate to customers who purchase other types of insurance as well.

If you are a frequent traveler, it is very important to have travel insurance for each trip you take. As with frequent flyer miles, you may find that travel insurance can pay for itself in time. If you’re like me and you sustain an injury away from home that requires medical attention or hospitalization, the hefty bill is a difficult one to pay in comparison to the charge one incurs paying for travel insurance.

The greatest truth about travel insurance is that there is no price to equal the peace of mind that comes from knowing I can travel safely and receive quality treatment should I need it, wherever I am.

How to Get Cheap Medical Insurance

How to Get Cheap Medical Insurance

Medical Insurance

Medical insurance costs have doubled in the last few years, and because of that a lot of people think they can’t afford to be covered. Other people feel they don’t need it because they’re healthy and won’t be stricken with a major medical problem. Wrong on both counts.

Fact is, we all need medical insurance and there are ways to get a cheap medical insurance rate.

Cheap Medical Insurance

Medicaid

If you’re in a low income bracket, your state has a Medicaid program that will provide medical insurance for you and your family if your qualify. Medicaid medical insurance provides coverage for dental care, eye care, health care, and prescription drugs. For information on Medicaid medical insurance, call or visit your nearest Division of Family Services office for details.

If you don’t qualify for Medicaid, your next step is to go shopping for an inexpensive health care plan. There are two types of insurance that offer the most benefits for the least amount of money – HMOs and PPOs:

HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations)

HMOs charge a fixed monthly fee for which they provide medical services that include doctor visits, hospitalization, surgery, and prescription drug coverage. Members must choose a primary car physician who oversees their health care, and they can only receive medical treatment from doctors and facilities that are part of the HMO’s network.

PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations)

PPOs are similar to HMOs in that you receive medical services through a prescribed network of physicians and facilities. But unlike HMOs, members do not need to get permission from their primary care physician to see a specialist. PPOs cost about 5% more than HMOs.

Cheap Medical Insurance Rates

You can call local insurance companies or go to individual insurance sites to get medical insurance rate quotes, but the easiest way to get quotes is to go to an insurance comparison website.

Insurance comparison sites let you get quotes from a number of insurance companies. You want to get at least three quotes, then choose the quote that’s best for your circumstances. If you have any questions about health insurance, the better comparison sites have insurance professionals on hand who can answer them.

The Health Insurance Safety Net if You Lose Your Job

The Health Insurance Safety Net if You Lose Your Job

COBRA: The Health Insurance Safety Net If You Lose Your Job

For the millions of Americans who receive health insurance through their employer, the thought of losing their job—and their health insurance coverage—is an extremely distressing fear. A federal law known as the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, or COBRA, enables individuals who lose their employment-based group health coverage because they have lost their job (and for certain other reasons, known as “qualifying events”) to continue that coverage, at a cost, for a temporary period of time. The following Q&A provides a primer on the basics of COBRA continuation coverage.
Who is eligible? Under COBRA, group health plans sponsored by employers with 20 or more employees generally are required to offer employees and their dependents an extension of group health insurance coverage after a job loss. (If you have lost your job due to “gross misconduct,” your employer is not required to offer you COBRA coverage. Gross misconduct entails extremely wrongful actions on the part of an employee, such as those that are wanton, willful or reckless.) The law does not cover the District of Columbia, federal employees, particular church-related programs and most companies with fewer than 20 employees (although continuation might be available at the state level for small businesses).

However, if your employer drops all of its health plans, or goes out of business, it no longer has the obligation to continue your COBRA coverage. Additionally, if you move outside of the designated coverage area of your health plan, you can lose COBRA benefits.
When does coverage go into effect? If you are eligible for COBRA and lose your job either voluntarily or involuntarily, you may extend your coverage for yourself and your dependents for up to 18 months. An employer also can be required to offer COBRA coverage in situations other than a job loss. For example, if you become eligible for Medicare or you get divorced or legally separated, your spouse and dependent children can receive up to 36 months of continued health insurance coverage. Your dependent children also can receive up to 36 months of coverage if they lose dependent-child status on your health insurance plan.
You also may receive 29 months of COBRA coverage if you are qualified for Social Security disability benefits, lose your job and meet other specific requirements.
How much does it cost? COBRA requires an employer to make an offer of continuation coverage; it does not require the employer to pay for it, or to contribute to it on the same basis as it did when you had the coverage as an active employee. If you want COBRA coverage, your employer can require that you pay 100% of what the coverage costs (in other words, both the premium you had paid as an active employee, plus any share of the premium that your employer may have paid). In addition, your employer can require that you pay an additional 2% in administrative costs. COBRA premiums can be extremely expensive for someone who is unemployed, but because the premium is calculated on a group policy, it may be less expensive than a premium on an individual policy especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions.
What if I don’t want COBRA coverage? If you are eligible to receive COBRA coverage after losing your job, you may be thinking about turning down the coverage. Maybe you think it’s too pricey and you’re planning on finding a new job with health insurance very soon. However, you may want to reconsider.
Here’s why: Unless you have a firm job offer in hand, it can take you longer than you think to find new employment and when you do, there may be a waiting period before you are eligible for your new employer’s health benefits. In the meantime, you will be without health coverage and if you have an accident or are diagnosed with a serious illness, you may find yourself in quite a bind.
Furthermore, if you have a gap in insurance coverage longer than 63 days, you will lose your health insurance rights under HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). This federal law guarantees that people with continuous health coverage cannot be denied health insurance even if they have a pre-existing condition. However, if your gap in coverage exceeds 63 days and you either already have a pre-existing condition or are diagnosed with a condition, you may have a hard time finding an insurer to cover you. Therefore, it may be best to accept COBRA coverage until you can find a new job with health benefits.
What if my company doesn’t offer COBRA? If you work for a smaller company that does not offer COBRA, you still may have “COBRA-like” rights through your state. Many states have implemented their own COBRA laws that offer employees at smaller companies the opportunity to purchase COBRA coverage.
Where can I learn more? As a federal law, COBRA falls under the Department of Labor’s jurisdiction. If you have questions about COBRA or grievances to report, you should contact your regional office of the Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Choosing the Right Insurance Company

Choosing the Right Insurance Company

Today choosing insurance policies may confuse anyone with a little knowledge of the insurance policies in general. Equally, dozens of insurance companies may also confuse a buyer. However, it is necessary that the buyer knows exactly what they are buying and what their requirements are.

Once they have identified their insurance needs, they can select among the different companies in the market. But how do you ensure that the company you are signing on with is trustworthy? How do you choose the right insurance company?
The following points will help the customer to make a well informed decision.

Sound Financial History
Carefully scrutinize the reputation and services of the insurance company. Check on its recent developments and position in the market. Ensure that the insurer has a solid footing and has sound financial background.

Credit History
Make sure that the company you are choosing has a solid track record of settling claims and treats the customer well. Ask around and if possible consult an independent agent who can brief you about the credit standing of the companies.

Premium Factor
Since you know your insurance needs, you need to study about the premium charged by various companies. You can list the quotes offered by companies for a particular product and decide accordingly. However, your decision should not be made on price alone. Buying cheap insurance does not necessarily mean that you get substantial coverage. Hence, you should not bargain simply because you get what you pay for.

Check Coverage
Always focus on the coverage provided by the company. Ensure that the policy has comprehensive coverage to guard you against emergencies. Say suppose you are planning to buy a health plan, make sure that you get terrorism cover, which is an urgent requirement of the present time.

Cashless Network
Find out the network of hospitals/ garages under the cashless claim facility provided by the company. When opting for health insurance and travel insurance it is very important that you are able to avail cashless claim in hospitals of your own choice. Similarly, for your car insurance, the vicinity of the cashless garage is essential.

Customer Service
An affordable insurance policy will not be much useful if it is not backed by a company which is customer-oriented. See if the company has proper network of agents, offices and call centers. Also check their online interactive services and its effectiveness.

Buy Online Facility
Buying your policy online is always preferable. The main reason being that you can do everything independently and hence you are not dependant on any third person. Also, buying online is extremely convenient and can be done within few minutes without any paperwork. When you buy online, an e-policy is generated which is a valid legal document. One can access this policy anytime anywhere. Also check on other online services such as online renewal, online claim tracking etc.

Choosing the right insurance company may not be that easy. Be patient, do thorough research keeping in mind the above pointers which will surely help you make the right decision.

Homeowners Insurance Costs – Cut your Bill in Half!

Homeowners Insurance Costs – Cut your Bill in Half!

Homeowners insurance costs are on the rise and in some areas of the country premiums are astronomical. So how can you whittle your insurance cost down to a size you can afford? Read on …

1. Switch Companies and Save up to 40%

I know some people who’ve saved $1,000 and more, and even gotten better service, by simply switching their homeowners insurance from one company to another

There are insurance websites where you can get homeowners quotes from a number of different companies so you can compare rates and choose the best one. Some of the better sites even have an insurance expert on call so you can chat with him or her online and get answers to any questions you may have.

It’s fast, it’s easy, and it won’t cost you a dime. (See link below.)

2. Raise Your Deductible and save 15% to 35%

By raising your deductible from $500 to $1,000 you can save 15% to 25% on your insurance premium. Raising it to $2,500 can save you up to 35%.

Raising your deductible not only saves you money, it saves you from making too many small claims which can cause an insurance company to cancel your insurance.

3. Install Safety and Security Systems and save 5% to 20%

Installing safety and security systems like smoke detectors, fire alarms, burglar alarms, sprinkler systems, security lights, and security doors can save you 5% to 20% on your homeowners insurance costs.

This also makes your home a safer place to live in.

4. Ask for Other Discounts

You may not be aware of all the discounts you’re entitled to like senior discounts and non-smoker discounts, so before you purchase a homeowners policy make sure you ask your agent about all the discounts his company offers.

Life insurance and retirement planning

Life insurance and retirement planning

Someone once asked me “What does life insurance have to do with retirement?”. It was a good question, since the link between the two is not blatantly obvious to most. For those who are familiar with financial planning, the connection between life insurance and retirement planning is all too apparent. Life insurance and retirement planning are related in the more than a couple ways.

Forced savings for retirement

One of the benefits of cash-value life insurance (that term-insurance apologists fail to recognise) is forced savings. The reality is that financially indisciplined people would not save much or “invest the difference” without cash-value life insurance plans. The savings portfolio helps those folks put aside money that can be used for retirement.

Contributions towards your retirement fund

Good cash-value life insurance plans that have been in existence for more than 15 years would accumulate a significant sum by the time you reach your retirement age. You can use these funds to augment your accumulated retirement savings or use the interest or dividends to contribute to your income stream.

How much you have to save towards retirement

You would not want to pay so much for your life insurance that you reduce your options for retirement planning. When doing retirement planning, you would normally determine what percentage of your income that you could save. A life insurance premium could decrease this amount. On the other hand, your retirement planning commitments can reduce the amount you have to finance a life insurance plan. This is why it is a good option to seek low-cost insurance or term insurance for short and medium-term life insurance needs.

Hybrid retirement plans with some aspect of life insurance

Some retirement plans offer life insurance. As part of your financial planning, you may decide that it creates higher value to choose such a plan than to seek retirement instruments and life insurance separately.

Retirement planning for couples

For those who are married, the retirement status of both spouses is critical. If one spouse is not-working or has a low pension, life insurance may be a way of ensuring that the other spouse can have a replacement income in the event of death of the earning spouse. Life insurance protects your loved ones who may depend on you during retirement as well.

Life insurance with optional supplementary benefits

Some life insurance plans are embedded with long-term health care and critical illness as supplementary benefits that could extend into retirement. These “riders” usually have a reduced cost than stand-alone plans and could be used to offset the medical insurance aspect that is vital to retirement planning.

How much insurance to keep after retirement

When you retire, you should normally reassess your life insurance portfolio. Retirement planning may influence the type of life insurance you would buy. If you are using life insurance to protect your spouse who may be wholly or partially dependent on your income, you may choose permanent life insurance. If you figure that your mortgage needs would be taken care of and you’d have financed your children’s education by retirement, your choice may be term insurance.

The link between life insurance and retirement planning is a strong one. This is because retirement planning is merely an extension of financial planning. It is true that life insurance is a vital cog in the wheel of most people’s financial plan.

Once you understand the link between life insurance and retirement planning, it would be easier to plan for one in terms of the other.

Commercial Vehicle Insurance

Commercial Vehicle Insurance

Choosing commercial vehicle insurance policy might seem a simple task as portrayed by most insurance corporations especially with the online sellers. You simply evaluate the risk, determine the premiums and pay money for the product. This is the kind of information you are likely to come across in those sites and all of a sudden you rush to fill subscription profile information unaware of the complexities ahead.

Nowadays buying insurance has been weighed against buying a personal pension in terms of its difficulty. All insurance is measured by risk just like in any other financial investments, usually the higher the risk the higher the premiums.

It is significant to keep this in mind when looking for any kind of commercial vehicle insurance. What you might think of as fairly risk-free might not demonstrate itself that way on insurance terms and conditions of operation. There several issues you must consider first. Try accurately to assess the risk you are insuring against. It is a surprising fact, but many companies either over-insures, so paying for cover they do not really coincide to or under-insure so only covering up to the amount paid for in terms of premiums.

Taking into account changing circumstances in relation to the automobile industry is yet another thing to put in mind, because risk could take a different drift with time just like your car will depreciate, can change with time, or as the company expands into new activities, as the crime rate increases. For all times, write down precisely what kind of commercial vehicle insurance cover you are searching for and make sure you stick to it, do not rely on what someone else think is a policy that you need. Possibly to make this easier you should consider dealing with an insurance broker but, if you do, understand that you might have to pay a commission.

Consider buying an insurance package whereby you insure more than a few items at once. This is almost always cheaper than buying individual items, such as a comprehensive policy that covers quite a lot. Insurance is offered by an innumerable of financial institutions, far beyond the previous specialist insurance companies. You will be spoiled for a choice or simply get confused on the way. All insurance costs money and it is therefore wise to devote regular time during your business schedule to reviewing your commercial vehicle insurance cover.

Action checklist that you should prepare before buying any commercial vehicle insurance policy includes the following points. Decide whether you are going to use a broker; if so, make sure you are clear about price and commissions. Insurance broking is regulated and you are entitled to see this sort of information and in particular automobile insurance brokers. Also make sure you are presented with, or seek out, options from the people you trust to know all this.

Ensure you have read and understood all relevant clauses in the policy document; if not, have them clarified to you. Look out for excess fees and exclusion clauses. Make sure the totals you are quoted relate to the policy you are presented with.

It is not unknown for both brokers and insurers to offer deals simply to stimulate interest from buyers. Be frank when asked about your insurance history and material information relating to your business, the courts tend to support insurers in dubious claims cases.

Get the Best Rate on Group Medical Insurance

Get the Best Rate on Group Medical Insurance

Looking for group medical insurance? Here’s how to get the best rate on group medical insurance with a top insurance company.

Group Medical Insurance

With individual health insurance costs at an all time high, group medical insurance plans are becoming more and more popular. Any business with 2 to 50 employees can get a group medical insurance plan, the trick is finding an affordable plan.

Group Medical Insurance Benefits

Because group medical insurance plans spread the financial risk between all the members of the plan, your rates are much lower than they would be if you were purchasing individual insurance through the same insurer.

Group Medical Insurance Plans

Group insurance plans fall under two categories: indemnity plans, also known as fee-for-service plans, and managed care plans – HMOs, PPOs, and POSs.

* Indemnity plans are the most expensive plans. You can choose your own physicians and hospitals. You pay your bill after you see your physician and are then reimbursed by your insurance company.

* Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) are the cheapest plans. You are provided with a network of physicians and hospitals chosen by your insurer. You pay a monthly fee, and visits and prescriptions must be approved by your insurer.

* Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) are the most popular plans. They’re similar to an HMO, but you have the option of seeing out-of-network doctors for an extra fee. They cost a little more than an HMO.

* Point of Service Plan (POSs) are more expensive than HMOs and PPOs but you have the option of choosing non-network physicians. You’re still covered if you see a non-network physician, but you may have to pay more for his or her services depending on your plan.

Bottom Line

If you want the most flexible plan and are willing to pay for it, then an indemnity plan is what you need. If you want the cheapest plan, and don’t don’t mind your doctors being chosen for you, then an HMO plan is what you want. If you want a little more flexibility than an HMO, a PPO plan is what you’re looking for. And if you want the most flexibility of all the managed health care plans, and are willing to pay a little more for your insurance, then a PPO is your best bet.

Get the Best Rate on Group Medical Insurance

After you choose the group medical insurance plan which fits your needs, the easiest way to find the best rate is to go to an insurance comparison website where you can compare rates from different companies.

The better comparison sites let you talk with insurance experts online or by phone, so you can get answers to all your insurance questions.

Compare pet insurance policies – Part 2

Compare pet insurance policies – Part 2

Considering getting health insurance for your pet, there is quite a bit of information to know, but there are only a handful of insurance companies. Looking over some different policies can become confusing, and may even turn you away from the prospect of getting your beloved pet the insurance plan that is right for him/her. The best way to go about looking for insurance is to determine your pets needs, then look over the policies of some insurance companies. You can even call them on a toll free number.

Most pet insurance companies have different coverage plans. But

basically, it all boils down to what is covered, what are the monthly premiums, and what is the deductible. Initially, you need to ask yourself what type of coverage are you looking for. Do you want routine vet visits covered, prescription drugs? How much in premiums are you willing to pay? These are some very basic questions, but very necessary ones. It’s important that you know what is covered and how much it will cost.

Most pet insurance plans offer the basic coverage, such as vaccinations and annual exams. Usually, this is the least expensive plan. Then, there are other plans that may offer coverage just for operations and extensive diagnostic testing. There are plans that just offer accident insurance in case of an accident. Still other plans offer the most coverage. This usually includes the basic coverage along with accident coverage and diagnostic coverage. But you may not need this type of plan if all that you are concerned about is just having the coverage for just expensive diagnostic testing.

There are pet insurance plans that have a limit for your pets age. It’s important that you find out what this limit is. Your pet may not be eligible for coverage. Also, some plans won’t let your pet participate due to the hereditary conditions of the breed, such as hip dysplasia and other hereditary conditions. So, it’s very important for you to look over what the plan provides and what it doesn’t provide.

It’s important to choose the right insurance company too. Some companies have been around longer than others. The company that’s been around the longest is called Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI). Just make sure that when you choose a company, they have a good track record. You can find out this information on line or check with the Better Business Bureau to find out if there have been any complaints.

Just remember to look over all plans offered by all companies. One companies plan might be similar to another companies plan but have less expensive premiums. Also, make sure that you get the coverage you need that best suits your pets needs.

If you do your homework, you will always be better off for it.
