Ten things you should always buy new – Part 1

Ten things you should always buy new – Part 1

Shopping flea markets, vintage clothing shops and good will stores is a smart move if you are on a budget. The list of items you can save money on is endless. However, there are a few things that should never be purchased used, for reasons ranging from good hygiene to sentimental. Here are ten things that should always be bought new and the reasons why.

1-Pillows and mattresses

Body oil tends to work its way through sheets and pillowcases and so do other things. These items cannot be washed easily and are better purchased new.

2-Lingerie

Panties, bras and hose are all items you should never buy used. All women love pretty lingerie but even if you boil or bleach it, the thoughts of where it was before you acquired it will haunt you. It’s not that expensive, buy some new.

3-Car seats

Babies are messy. Their diapers sometime overflow when they are sick. There are too many seams, cracks and crevasses to clean in a car seat, no matter how well you clean. Buy a new one, your baby deserves it.

4-Baby feeding items

Bottles, feeding dishes, sippy cups and pacifiers are not expensive. These should never be bought used. Buy new ones that you know are sterile.

5-Stuffed animals and dolls

Mites and other vermin have a way of working into fabric items and taking up residence there. Even molds can grow inside them. While it is true you can wash most stuffed animals, you will never know for sure if they are sanitary for your child to play with.

5-Chew toys for pets

Never buy your pet a used chew toy. You never know the health of the pet that owned it before or just where it may have been, like next to a toilet maybe. Make your own or buy one new.

6-Make-up and Personal toiletries

Not only should you never buy used make-up, you should never borrow from a friend either. Skin or eye diseases can be transferred on the brush or puffs alone. Buy it new!

Personal toiletries such as toothbrushes, combs and brushes, deodorants and soaps should never be purchased used. For the sake of your personal health, buy only new packaged items.

7-Portable electronic gadgets

Laptops, ipods, DVD players and other electronic gadgets can be dropped or exposed to high heat and not show it. Nevertheless, the damage is done inside where it really counts. The cost for these items gets lower each year, so save up and buy a new one.

8-Shoes

The used shoe shops are doing a brisk business since they have found a way to sanitize used shoes. However once shoes are worn (even for a short while) they take the shape of the owners foot. This might not coincide with the shape of yours. Buy new shoes that are fitted to your foot.

9-Foods and storage containers

Never buy partially used foods. You have no way of knowing how long they have been opened or how securely they have been stored. Opened food can be easily contaminated.

You will never know how a food container was used. Neither can you know if it was left too long in a microwave making it unsafe. Plastic containers left too long in a microwave will leech chemicals into your foods. In addition, plastic is a hard thing to sterilize.

10-Wedding Rings

Unless it is a family heirloom being passed down, the ring you present to your beloved should be new. While it is true you can buy a nice ring at a great savings sometimes, buying one of lesser monetary value will give it more personal value and show your love just as well.

I would discourage anyone from buying these items used. They will never be found in my home, or in any of my yard sales. Shop wisely and protect the health of yourself, your family and your pets. Click Here!

Ten things you should always buy new – Part 2

Ten things you should always buy new – Part 2

Ten items that you should always buy new are quite basic and have to do with your health, which my mother insisted was the one thing they couldn’t take away from you.

You should always buy a new toothbrush. I haven’t found any used toothbrushes on sale at like pawn shops or what have you. But if most children are like mine, you usually have a collection of say thirty brushes in the time of a year. Most of those brushes can be used when shoved aside for a new model to clean behind the faucets and to reach those hard to get at spots in your bathroom.

Bars of soap should always be purchased with the wrappers on and not stuffed in decorative tatted bags and advertised as loofah substitutes.

You should always purchase a new wife as one with a few testers brings a lot of baggage with her and you might have to build an extra room to store her bags.

Never, never purchase pillows at garage sales or elsewhere as the bug population in those heads rest exceed the bugs making sure you are watching their channel and a victim to their ads.

Mattresses sold at bargain rates are not a bargain. Ask to see their tags and for heaven’s sake stay away from used mattresses. If you think preused pillows are a health hazard think of those bugs multiplied by the size of the mattress in comparison to the pillow.

Makes you leery about going into hotels, doesn’t?

Never purchase someone else’s secretary especially if you are on social terms with her former employer. Especially back off without reservation if the former employer is pushing her off on you. Are you in business?

Never purchase second hand information from so and so told me that. Gossip is free why should you pay for it?

Never buy used shoes. You can find a new pair at Payless and help yourself to a pair of socks with the same money you would have used to buy a used pair of shoes. And, don’t get yourself caught in the brand name thing, it is all a bunch of bull and you will be sorry if you fall for the used famous name type thing.

Buy fresh, newly made dentures from a dentist you can fall in love with because I am here to tell you that with all the time they spend in your mouth, gazing into your eyes, you had better get a new pair and prepare to sweat as if in the pangs of new love.

There are many things that you should buy new and I have here a suggestion if you intend to put that object in your mouth, on your skin as in perfume, do not buy used bottles of the stuff at garage sales, really, get real, you should buy those items new.

Ten things you should always buy new – Part 3

Ten things you should always buy new – Part 3

There are many bargains to be had if you are willing to buy used. However, there are also many things that should be bought new. Somethings are negotiable, these are not.

1. Couches- While tables and chairs and other pieces of furniture may be acceptable to buy used, couches are not. First of all, you never know what has been on this persons couch. Most often, you would be surprised. Also, there may be parasites and other dangerous that can not be detected by just looking at the couch. Also if someone is looking to sell there couch, you would have to wonder why.

2. Refrigerator- Just like used cars, fridges can be fixed to look well and run well for a while, even if they are held together with tin foil. You need to look very very carefully to find a decent used one out there. My advice is to just buy new.

3. Stereos- Once these are purchased, they lose almost all value. There is no telling what people will do with there stereos, and again, you can’t tell by just looking and listening.

4. Pool Table- May be this is a little obscure but personal experience dictates that I mention this, believe me, tables are usually not maintained properly and become warped very easily.

5. Rims- Sounds safe? No way! Maybe there is nothing wrong with them, but they happened to be one of the most stolen and resold car articles. It is just too easy and the profit too big, and ignorance or not, you don’t want the police to know you bought stolen goods, much less the poor chap that had them taken. Proceed with caution.

6. Fire arms- Again, there is probably nothing wrong, but why risk it? Also, if the rifling is damaged, you may not know if it is safe for you to operate.

7. Kids toys- As the seasoned parent will know, kids toys collect A LOT of germs and some are inside small crevices and holes in the toys where they are overlooked, a breeding ground for sickness.

8. Digital cameras, Ipods- The resale price is usually not worth it. Also use the smell test, if it smells fishy, don’t do it.

9. Electric Tools

10. Celling Fans

Cut Your Home Energy Bills This Summer!

Cut Your Home Energy Bills This Summer!

Now that summer is here, it’s time crank up the air conditioners – and your electric costs. However, there a number of ways to cut your home energy costs this summer. By taking some of these steps, you can significantly cut your bills by a cool third or more!

1. Use a Programmable Thermostat – Cut your energy costs by investing in a programmable thermostat. They allow you to set different temperatures for specific times of the day. For example, you can program your AC to turn down during the day when no one is home, and then put it on again thirty minutes before you return home. Installing a programmable thermostat costs around $100 to $150, but the energy savings can be substantial.

2. Clean Your AC Units – Keep your air-conditioning units clean and in peak performance. Have your AC system checked by a professional regularly. Air conditioning filters should generally be checked every month or so for cleaning or replacement.

3. Seal Leaky Areas – Leaky windows and ducts makes your air conditioner work harder. Properly insulated and sealed ducts save you in energy costs. If you think your duct system is leaky, have it checked out by an HVAC technician.

4. Replace Your Light Bulbs – Compact fluorescent light bulbs use 75% less energy than regular, incandescent light bulbs, and they last up to 10 times longer, too. These bulbs come in sizes that fit into any fixture. A 100-watt incandescent bulb bulb can be replaced with an equivalent 23-watt fluorescent, using 2/3 less energy.

5. Plant Trees – Planting trees around your house can help cut your annual heating and cooling cost. Leafy trees, such as maples, shields your home from direct sunlight, keeping it cooler, while allowing sunlight to reach the home during the winter.

6. Use Ceiling Fans – Ceiling fans help even out a room’s temperature. This allows you to turn down the air conditioner while still feeling cool.

7. Unplug Your Appliances – Even when your home electronics are turned off, many continue to use energy. Any appliance with a clock or remote control all use energy when they are not in use.

8. Shop Smart – When shopping for appliances, invest in energy-efficient appliances that help save energy throughout the life of the item. Look for the Energy Star label. Click Here!

Small steps can equal big savings – and help the environment, too!

Cash Back – How the Concept Works

Cash Back – How the Concept Works

Cash back rewards program has literally taken the online retail shopping by storm in present days. With this program, you can earn cash rewards on every purchase.

Cash back websites pay the amount to members through different payment options. They pay the reward within the stated time in cash and not points. Thus, with this money you can buy other products.

How It Works?

In online retail stores, many merchandisers advertise their items on their websites. Whenever, you click on an advertisement and buy the commodities or services, the retailer pays certain amount of fee to the owner of the retailer’s website.

You will come across many such ads on different websites, if you shop online. Cash back reward websites are an interface between merchandisers as well as online shoppers. When online retailers click on the website links of online retailers, listed on the portals, they are directed to a retailer’s site. After buying the desired products, you get the cash back percentage as promised by the web site.

Another way to buy from a cash back reward website is by finding the top rated retails store, which offers cash back facility. Next, you need to register yourself at such site. Here you will find gallery of different retailers on the website. You can choose your retailer and buy the products.

However, the cash back rewards will be offered by the main website. If you want to check your cash back reward status, then you will have to sign-in as a member. Through this, you will get details of the cash back.

You need to refer to the chart. The first column usually displays the items that you bought. Second column displays the actual cost of the products and the third column will display the cash back that you obtained against that purchase. Usually, portals offer fixed cash back on the purchase.

You can also see the status of your cash back reward in the last column. If your status depicts “pending”, then it means your rewards have not been delivered yet. If the status shows delivered, then it means you have received cash rewards. In case, your status depicts as delivered, but you have not received it, then you will have to contact the customer support of that website.

Overview:

Some cash back rewards websites offer free membership to customers, while some ask for a fee. Few websites may also offer you with bonus on joining. They also pay you some additional bonus, if you refer your friends or family members to make purchase.

Thus, with the increasing rise in the costs of commodities, cash back reward websites give you some respite, as you obtain money after every purchase. However, the only downside is that there are limits on cash back rewards. You cannot expect to get cash back on purchase of single item. You will have to buy items in bulk or make big purchase to become eligible for the cash back reward program.

Where to start saving money?

Where to start saving money?

It is hard to imagine but a lot of people have no savings at all. Many reasons such as lack of money to save, lack of a savings plan, and sometimes just simple, plain laziness prevents a person from saving for their future, a rainy day, or for retirement. Thus, where do you start if you want to start a savings plan?

The first thing you need to consider is whether or not you should pay off your credit card debt before you start to save. The best interest rate for a savings account is usually just under six percent. On the other hand, the average interest rate for a credit card is over ten percent. Therefore, if you decide to save money instead of pay off your credit card debt, you will be losing four percent on the money that you use to save instead of using to pay off your debt.

Once the debt issue is resolved, you need to create a plan to start saving money. There are several ways to start building a savings account, such as saving change and participating in a direct deposit plan in which a certain amount of your paycheck is automatically deposited into your savings account of choice. Of all the various ways that exist in which one can save money, I believe that the direct deposit method is the best way because everything is automated. In other words, you are forced to save money.

Many people believe that they have to put away big amounts in order to start saving money. This is not true. Most savings accounts require that you have a minimum deposit of only one hundred dollars.

Make sure that the savings account is “no fee.” This way you will be able to keep all of the interest that you acquire and will be able to save at your own pace. Remember, you do not need to deposit a lot of money from every paycheck in order for your savings to start to add up. Something as little as twenty dollars per paycheck would be a sufficient addition to your savings.

If you can not afford to save twenty dollars per paycheck, save ten dollars. The point is, you need to save something so that you get into the habit of saving money. Once your financial situation gets better, increase your monthly savings amount.

Savings accounts are supposed to be zero risk. Therefore, you want to pick a savings account with compound interest and that is in a risk free investment. Now is not the time to put your money into stocks.

Following these steps and evaluating your financial situation will help you start to establish your savings. Remember, check your credit card debt, automate your savings, save as much as possible but do not worry if it is only a small amount, and make sure the savings account is risk free. Having a savings account is an important financial tool, start yours today. Click Here!

Tips for building your own home – Part 2

I live in a house that was built by my Father and Grandfather in the 1980′s just before I was born. Everything was handmade and built in this house by family members. The land was passed down through family and a home built as well. My Grandfather and Father also built a cabin together about twenty minutes North from where I live. My Grandfather and relatives of his built his own house back when he was a young married man. Beyond that I am sure every house was built by the land owners themselves. Today it is my dream to follow up on that old tradition.

Back in the day it was thought to be a money saver to build your own things and even the cupboards inside this home was built by the very same family members that built this house. The bathroom vanity, shelves and drawers were built and handcrafted by the family as well. The dressers and closet cupboards were built and every piece of molding was handcrafted by my Father. Right down to the little coffee tables and plant holders were built by family. Building things from their own hands was a loved hobby in this family. As of today everything is factory made and much less expensive. Anyone who has any will to save money will not build their own solid pine furniture and construction pieces. Most will buy a home as opposed to building a home since it takes time and money to build. It also costs more to purchase the land to build a home on.

There are several pros and cons to buying and building when it comes to houses. Buying a house can be much faster to move into if you set up a mortgage. If luck has anything to do with it, repairs may not come until a decent amount of savings has been put away. The downside is that mortgages are not not easily obtained for regular working people and can be costly over a period of time. Buying a house can be like buying a used car at sometimes. Houses are done over so they can be sold and in many cases the work has only been done to hide the real damage until the house is purchased. It is quite scary when such a large amount of money has been spent on the house and double that amount will go into fixing all the rot beneath the repairs.

With building your own home you know what goes into it and you know it gets done right the first time so long as those hired are trustworthy. This way you can avoid unnecessary repairs of faulty windows and rotted baseboards. A house built for you can be customized the way you want it and it is yours. Some take mortgages out on a built house when they want the process to go faster so they can move in quickly. Without loans or mortgages the building process can take up to five years or more. The biggest advantage to building your own home is that it will always be yours so long as you pay the inevitable taxes and it becomes your pride and joy. Knowing that the home was built by the hands of yourself and your family you strive to take care of it and develop a sense of appreciation when the hard work is done for the most part.

A house is an ongoing metamorphosis of development and ten years later of putting all of your blood and sweat into it you can look at that house and say, “I did this. I created something that is mine. It is my home and my life’s work. I did this.” Building, taking care of a house, and up keeping the land is no small feat in today’s world of “I need it now but I don’t want to do the work”.
